Handle food safely during summertime outings

It's picnic time again. That means it's time to picnic smart and keep food poisoning away from yourself and your group. Following these guidelines to reduce the risk of food poisoning, which can spoil your summertime picnic.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables before packing them for the picnic.
  • Eat deli foods within an hour or two of purchase or buy them the day before and chill them thoroughly overnight.
  • Thaw frozen meat in the refrigerator, not on the counter. Pack raw meat securely to keep juices from contaminating other foods.
  • Pack perishable foods in small containers for more even chilling.
  • Fill up your cooler with ice so it will stay cold longer. At the picnic, keep the cooler in the shade. Avoid repeated openings.
  • Bring premoistened wipes or a bottle of soapy water for washing your hands before handling food.
  • Cook meats and fish on the grill until they are completely done.
  • Put grilled meats and fish on a clean plate. Don’t put cooked food on a platter or work surface that held raw meat.
  • Keep utensils, dishes, and food covered. Insects can carry salmonella and other germs.
  • Discard any perishable picnic food that was left out in hot weather for more than an hour.
